The story behind the hannya mask is that when a person would die with too many negative emotions they would turn into a demon who would destroy villages and eat people. The human side of them would be stuck inside watching the actions happen but unable to stop them. The moral being that if you let negative emotions consume you, you will watch yourself do things you never intended.
To that end I wanted to illustrate a beetle with a shell of hannya mask as the horns of the mask flowed beautifully into the beetle horns.
